For some, post-extubation swallowing disorders have continued up to 4 months after discharge. If you continue to have swallowing issues it is essential to see your doctor as there are modifications to the types and textures of foods that will allow you to get the nutrition you need safely.

Vitamins and Minerals are essential substances that the body needs to grow and function. Your body needs thirteen vitamins, but does produce Vitamin K by the gut microflora and Vitamin D from the sunlight.[23] There are two types of vitamins, including fat-soluble vitamins and water-soluble vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins are vitamins that are soluble in organic solvents, which include vitamins A, K, E, and D.[24] Water-soluble vitamins are vitamins that are soluble in water and include vitamin C and B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12, and folate.[25] Most of the essential vitamins the body needs can be obtained by a balanced diet, with the exception of a portion of the population who don't get enough micronutrients from their diet or have a health condition that affects their nutritional needs. Similarly to vitamins, minerals are needed for your body to be healthy and to function properly. Minerals function to keep your bones, muscles, heart, and brain working correctly. Minerals also play a crucial role in the regulation and function of the immune system. In the adaptive immune system,[26] the mineral zinc is an important structural element of the hormone thymulin, which is produced by the epithelial cells of the thymus[27] and mediates the maturation of pre-T lymphocytes into T lymphocytes[28][better source needed] needed to protect the body from infection.[29] Minerals include phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, and sulfur. There are also trace minerals needed in smaller amounts, which include iron, manganese, copper, iodine, zinc, cobalt, fluoride, and selenium.[30]

Proper feeding and care of young calves is the first step in raising healthy, productive replacement animals to enter your milking herd. Feed four quarts of high-quality colostrum within the first eight hours to provide calves with essential nutrients and antibodies. Match milk replacer to growth and weaning age goals to meet calves' needs and to balance feed costs and animal performance. Offer a palatable calf starter by three days of age to stimulate rumen development and allow weaning by four to six weeks of age. Remove uneaten starter daily to maintain freshness. Finally, remember that nutrition is not the only factor affecting calf health and growth. Provide calves with clean, dry, draft-free housing that protects them from harsh sun in the summer and cold winds in the winter. From three days of age, make fresh, clean, free-choice water available. Work with your veterinarian to ensure that calves receive adequate vaccination and to develop treatment protocols for sick calves.

It is well-established that good nutrition promotes health, while nutritional deficiencies can lead to many chronic diseases. Yet, many people underestimate the importance of achieving proper levels of micronutrients each day. For the human body to complete vital daily tasks, it must be given a wide and complex variety of key micronutrients. Micronutrients play a role in strengthening immune function and converting food into energy. They detoxify chemicals and medications as well as manufacture neurotransmitters, hormones, and other key signaling molecules in the body. Micronutrients also maintain tissue repair and cell regeneration. Becoming deficient in any one of these essential vitamins or minerals can create a breakdown of metabolic processes that safeguard health.
